Author Interview - ‎Gabriel Rheaume

Shah Fazli
Gabriel Rheaume, Thank you so much, what don't we know about you that we cannot find on your Amazon page, or website, for instance, what are your motivations in your life, not only for writing, but sorting out your life in general, you seemed to be a very pleasant person?

Gabriel Rheaume Well I am a recovering drug addict. The Shores We Walk is based on my life. I play the role as the narrator and the protagonist Francis. I have a work-a-day boring job, but plan on using working at a rehab facility or some other profession to help others. I live with my girlfriend in beautiful Port Huron, Michigan and right now spend time enjoying life and continue writing.

Shah Fazli Do you want to tell us a little bit more about The Shores We Walk, what do we expect to read there?

Gabriel Rheaume
When all the people close to Francis end up dying, a lot of questions are left in the air while Francis falls into a deep psychosis. His girlfriend commits suicide and he turns to drugs and alcohol. It's written through a veil of drugs and visits from beyond the grave. It's a love story, a tragedy, a struggle with faith, and brief moments of hope. Through all the darkness there is also so much beauty. Francis, based on a postmodern St. Francis of Assisi, is the protagonist, while the other main characters self-destruct, battling drug addiction, homelessness, and poverty. But through all this misfortune and tragedy I realized that life has more joys than sorrow and try to illustrate the beauty within the blight.

Shah Fazli How does Francis deal with these difficulties, can you tell us one example, does he go to church, does he go to his girlfriend, does he pray, what is there for him to look for?

Gabriel Rheaume
After his girlfriend, Christina dies he turns to alcohol and heroin. He isn't very proactive about dealing with the grief, and throughout the novel more tragedy occurs. His best friend dies of a heroin overdose in his apartment, and more people close to him end up dieing, but at that point he is so lost in his addiction and drug induced psychosis, he is really in a different planet. I will say that he has a vision that changes his perspective on life and faith.

Shah Fazli Tell us about the faith, how does the protagonist's faith change everything for him, how does it help?

Gabriel Rheaume He becomes cognizant of all of his wrong doings and recognizes that his choices create consequences. But the book is in the form of a Shakespearean tragedy, all the characters are dead, including Francis who is telling his story from purgatory. So his conversion comes too late.

Shah Fazli Fascinating, how does Francis start with telling his story, can you please take us there, how does this story start, it is fascinating to be there with him?

Gabriel Rheaume Each chapter is a flashback, like the moments that flash before your eyes when you die. The story begins at The Detroit Electronic Music Festival, one of Francis' most profound moments from his life.

Gabriel Rheaume Because he is there with his girlfriend.

Shah Fazli Does Francis teach us any practical way of how to deal with the difficulties he dealt with, or does he teach us anything that he hoped he could do differently?

Gabriel Rheaume The whole story is a lesson about the gravity of drug use. The consequences that occur. How escapism is inevitably going to lead to destruction. There are four main characters and their personal struggles, mainly addiction lead to their ultimate demise. The novel hopefully shocks anyone considering using drugs and it's given a lot of support to people that struggle with addiction and grief.

Shah Fazli I think you have written it beautifully the way you are describing it here, do we read romance in your book as well in any way, life or death?

Gabriel Rheaume Yes, it is a story of romance... If there wasn't the romance, I don't think the story would have ever existed.

Shah Fazli Read a few lines from your book for us please as much as we get a sense of your writing and story?

Gabriel Rheaume
https://www.createspace.com/3523749Christina is wailing on her father's guitar, the one she never learned to play. In between sobs, she chokes through her tears. "My family hates me... Francis hates me... I lost my job... I'm so SICK of th
is" She finishes a bottle of wine, wishing she had a cigarette, and just enough units of heroin to put all of her tormented thoughts aside, but she doesn't have any of that. "Daddy, why did you have to leave me? Why aren't you here for me?" She scribbles "sorry" on a post-it note and lets it fall to the floor, affixes a rope to a vacant spot where a hanging basket used to be. "Daddy," she cries, "I love you." She stands on a bench in the sunroom of her cottage, fits her head in-between the noose, her tears rain. She lets her feet slide off the bench into asphyxiation. As her feet kick on the air, she clenches the rope around her neck, three breathless minutes pass until her soul leaves her corpse to a slow sway.

Shah Fazli Thanks, can someone fully recover from addiction, what would be your message to those who are taking drugs?

Gabriel Rheaume I recommend going to rehab as soon as possible when drugs like heroin or any for that matter, begin to control your life. And heroin and prescription pills take hold very quickly. If someone is using a needle and think they have control, they are wrong. People in Narcotics Annonymous and AA believe in full recovery after a long time of being in the program.

Shah Fazli Tell us one more thing about your book, anything you like, before we finish this interview, please?

Gabriel Rheaume Well it's on sale right now until tomorrow for 99 cents at Amazon Kindle, I've had some great reviews and I recommend it to everyone, but especially for family members trying to understand addiction, drug addicts, and those who coping with grief and suicide survivors.
